Black window trim is making its way to a neighborhood near you. It’s an incredible look–chic & modern–but depending on the elements chosen, can come off traditional. This is why it’s become so popular, so fast. But, once you’ve made the commitment to black window trim, you’re left with some important decisions. What treatments will look best on my windows? Do I expose the trim or cover it? We have the answers to these questions and many more. Sometimes, it’s best to call in an expert.
Decisions, decisions
-Do you like to coordinate your look by blending colors or do you prefer the bold look of contrast?
-Do you plan to expose the black window trim? If so, how much trim will show?
-Do you have window grids on your black trim windows? (Consider choosing a fabric that complements the grid pattern.)
-Are your windows black on black, or black on white? This will affect the look inside and outside the home.
Look for Inspiration
As you scroll through photos on social media, take note of what styles you’re drawn to. With black trim windows, the sky’s the limit when it comes to window treatments. You can find examples of black window trim completed with anything from roman shades to roller shades, and cellulars to woven treatments. A favorite of ours is using draperies to frame out the window. Each choice will provide the light control, privacy & energy efficiency you need. Discover the look you want.
The Window Grid
Window grids can bring an elevated look to your home. They are an additional layer of interest and dimension. But, you’ll need to decide how much is too much at the window. If you want the grids to show through, you’ll need to choose a light-filtering fabric. If you prefer the grids to be completely covered, a room darkening fabric would work well. We also offer shades that present a seamless look across a large window, one very wide shade instead of multiple shades. If you choose multiples, but still want that seamless appeal, the window shades can be tailored to fit next to one another. In the end, there is no wrong choice, just personal preference. Here are a few examples of coverage. Which look fits your style best?
Here, a light filtering look exposes the window grids. But, the homeowner can still enjoy a level of privacy and UV protection. They went with a simple sheer roller shade to take advantage of the grid pattern.
Next, the same window features room darkening fabrics instead of light-filtering. Our clients appreciate increased light control and privacy with continued UV protection. In this case, the grids are visible but only when the window shades are in a raised position.
Can’t decide? Another popular option, known for its versatility, is the dual shades feature. It offers the ability to close out the light when you need darkness, but then, only soften it when you want light entering–through a light-filtering fabric. This is the best option if you love seeing the grids, but also need room darkening and complete privacy at times.
Specialty Shaped Black Trim Windows
Details matter, and specialty shaped windows with black trim make a statement by adding more character to your home. Did you know that grids can be part of arched windows? Many of our clients choose to leave the top portion of the window bare so light can enter across the ceiling. We love this look too. Here, the layered style of roman shades accented with drapery is an incredible way to complete tall windows. Look how the top of the window exposes the grid detail. A masterpiece at the window.
For a minimalist look, the arches can be left completely bare, creating art at the window. The interior lighting that enters across the ceiling is added interest.
For some, a contrasting color that stands out against the black trim is their preference. There are many color ways to choose from.
As for transom windows-depending upon the amount of sun exposure your room receives-they can remain bare or be treated with window coverings.
