Comparing Room Darkening and Blackout Blinds

To make the right decision on light control in your home, you have to know the difference between room darkening blinds and blackout blinds. The opacity of the fabrics you choose can make all the difference, with room darkening describing an atmosphere where *most* of the light is kept from entering the space, while blackout shades completely block the light, making it hard to see in front of you.

Which Choice Is Right for You?

Room darkening shades, blinds, shutters and drapes are what many homeowners are searching for. However, there are instances where you want it pitch black in the middle of the day. Clients who work third shift or those who struggle with migraines are typically more interested in blackout blinds. Some windows get prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and in Texas, that can mean the only window coverings that will protect your interiors from exhausting temperatures are blackout window treatments.

Light Gaps Can Be Distracting

Light gaps are the soft lines of light that appear along the edges of your room darkening blinds on a bright day. This can be the result of the fit of the window shades, the type of room darkening shade you choose, or the depth of your windows and how the blinds are mounted, whether they are inside or outside mounted. For many homeowners, they don’t mind slight gapping that produces a halo of light. But light gaps can be frustrating, especially if you’d like blackout shades to be truly blackout.

Are There Room Darkening Solutions for Light Gaps?

Working with one of our designers, we will show you how different types of window coverings will lay against the window frame. Some collections feature Kickback, a forward rolling design, where once the shade is lowered, it kicks back, setting the shade closer to the window. Another option in blackout window shades is LightLock, which provides a U-shaped channel inside the window frame, so as the blackout cellular shade closes, the light is sealed out. Another option is to layer side window draperies that can block light gaps, provide additional coverage if needed–and look beautiful in the room.

Room Darkening and Light Filtering on the Same Window

We call it the “best of both worlds” when you can have the widest range of light control and privacy on the same window. There are a few ways to achieve this goal, from light filtering to room darkening. Our designers can tell you more about each type of control, but here is some features to pique your interest…

Dual Shades for Room Darkening

The dual shades feature is a game-changer when it comes to choosing the right type of light control. Why? Because you don’t have to choose! You can have soft, filtered light when you want to relax in a beautiful atmosphere. You can ALSO have room darkening window shades when you want it dark. Same window. With this feature, you get two shades share one headrail: The front, light-filtering shade and a secondary, blackout roller shade. Enjoy the soft glow and view-through of the front window shade, with levels of privacy and reduced glare. Then, when you want it dark, the secondary shade lowers into place to provide the darkness you’ve been hoping for. Duette Honeycomb shades also offer a dual shade feature, with two shades joined in the middle. One is a light filtering cellular shade, the other is a room darkening cellular shade. Adjust them up and down to get the lighting perfect in your home.

Two-in-One Shades

Another option for this wide range of control are window shades that have sheer fabrics in one position and room darkening vanes in another. Room darkening window shades like Luminette Privacy Sheers, Pirouette Shades and Designer Banded Shades are all great examples of having a two-in-one lighting range that can produce blackout shade results.
